#13 Why is the Standard Model incompatible with the generation of gravitational waves coming from the primordial universe?

Supervisor(s):
It is possible that the universe as we know it today originated in a first order phase transition, which if strong enough, may have generated gravitational waves that can be detected in future experiments, with the LISA experiment. In this project we will start by exploring the reasons why the Standard Model is incompatible with a first order transition, and its relation to the discovery of the Higgs at the LHC. Next we will make an extension of the model where this transition can already occur, with the addition of just one field. The phase transitions will be analyzed with the program CosmoTransitions and we will see under what conditions gravitational waves can be detected.
