The electroweak phase transition can be the origin of several interesting phenomena. More than being the trigger for the Higgs mechanism which gives particles mass, it could explain the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe and be a source of a stochastic background of gravitational waves. But not in the context of the Standard Model…
In this project, we aim to explore what this phase transition would look like if we added an extra scalar field to the SM. First, we will derive the zero temperature effective potential that characterises the transition. Then, using the code BSMPT, we will add the temperature dependence and study its features, including whether future experiments can detect its gravitational signal
